It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…..especially on Pinterest. This week I’ve been in a Christmas mood and have been pinning away, of course while listening to Christmas music. Check out my Christmas Board for more Christmas pins I’ve found this week. Are you in the Christmas mood? Hard to believe only a few short weeks till Christmas. I don’t know about you, but I have a lot to do before then. Maybe I should start doing those things instead of having fun pinning on Pinterest!
And if you are Pinterest follow me and I’ll follow you back. You can find me here on Pinterest.
Happy Pinning!
I have been a little obsessed lately with the yarn holiday wreaths I’ve been spotting over on Pinterest. So I decided I would try to tackle my very own to place on our front door for the holiday season. Since I have a covered front door it works perfectly too. I had two little helpers while making the wreath so it made for a fun little project for all of us. They helped with the wrapping of the yarn around the wreath which honestly took the longest and if I made another wreath in the near future I would go with a thicker yarn. So note to you, go with a thicker yarn which will allow you to wrap the wreath a little faster. I have some other ideas for another wreath so if I get around it I’ll be hoping to work on that soon. But for now here is how to make this yarn wreath with felt flowers.
Here is what you’ll need:
Styrofoam Wreath (try one with rounded edges, all I could find was the one here)
Ivory or Off-White Yarn (or color of choice)
Felt (in colors of choice)
Martha Stewart Eyelash garland (found at my local Michael’s Craft Store)
Fabric glue
First, you will start the wreath by wrapping and wrapping the yarn around the Styrofoam. As I mentioned above, I recommend buying a thicker yarn so you won’t be wrapping for days like I was. Lesson learned on my part. Luckily, I had two little helpers that were eager to help in the wrapping of the yarn. The good thing is you can just watch a movie and wrap away. Once the yarn is wrapped and covering the wreath you can then use the red eyelash garland from Martha Stewart to wrap around the wreath to make the wreath almost look like a peppermint.
For the flowers, I used a couple different flowers using the felt. I did a little digging and found a couple tutorials to help in creating the flowers. Of course, the rose was the only one I really took pictures.
First you want to cut a circle out of the felt but make the edges a little rounded or flower like. Once you have the circle cut out, you want to cut to cut into the circle and keep cutting around the circle towards the middle. If you continue with the wave cutting pattern as you did on the exterior of the circle this will make for great rose petals. You’ll be almost cutting a swirl inside the circle until you have a long strip of felt. You’ll then start from the middle end of the strip (the center of the circle you just cut) and start wrapping/forming into your rose.
For the other flowers check out this tutorial from A Pumpkin and a Princess. I used both versions of flowers in the wreath, but preferred one over the other. For the poinsettia flower I just free formed and cut out in the felt. Sorry, no direction for this one.
Once you have all your flowers prepped and ready you can start applying them to the wreath using the fabric glue. And there you have your yarn Christmas wreath for outside or inside depending on if your front porch is covered or not.
Have fun! And if you are looking for another holiday wreath here is a indoor wreath I made last year using popcorn.

Halloween is among us and it’s one of my favorite times to decorate! The girls and I have been busy doing Halloween crafts and decorating their room and shhhh….don’t tell anyone but we actually started before October 1stin the decorating. Last week I had one day off before I headed off for my mini-vacation with my mom for my birthday and I thought I would surprise the girls when they got home from school with their door being decorated. I headed to Michael’s craft store and picked up a few things in order to make a indoor wreath. I say indoor because this wreath isn’t the most weather resistant. If you are looking for a outdoor DIY Halloween Wreath check out the one I posted about last year. Both are easy and fun to make. This wreath didn’t take much time to make and you only need a few materials.
Here is what you’ll need to get started:
Styrofoam Wreath
Black Ribbon (or ribbon color of choice)
4 – 6 ft Feather Boa’s (color of choice)
4 large spiders of color choice (I found mine at Michael’s Craft Store)
Hot Glue Gun
And here is how to put this indoor (and easy) wreath together:
Step 1: Place black ribbon around the top of the wreath and wrap around once. Using glue gun, glue ribbon onto wreath. The ribbon will allow the wreath to hang on a door. For extra support, you can also pin the ribbon into the wreath.
Step 2: Take one of your feather boas and hot glue one end to the wreath. Once dried you can start wrapping the boa around the wreath making sure to cover the Styrofoam. Hot glue the other end and continue doing the same thing with the other boas until wreath is completely covered.
Step 3: Now to have fun and apply the spiders! Figure out how you would like to place the spiders around the wreath. I used big spiders, but you could also use smaller spiders. Using the hot glue gun, glue back of spider as well as the spot you would like to place the spider on the wreath. It’s best if you push some of the feathers aside in order to glue the spider onto the Styrofoam.
Step 4: Allow everything to dry in place before hanging. Hang ribbon over door with wreath showing on the side you want visable. Using a small nail tack the ribbon at the top of the door to anchor the wreath and hold in place.
And here is what the finished product looked like on the girls door. They were very surprised and very happy when they came home last week to see this on their bedroom door. To hang it I just took a small nail and tacked the ribbon down at the top of the door. And presto! A indoor Halloween wreath! Quick, Easy, and a whole lot of fun!
Note: In addition to the wreath I taped on the door spiders made out of black card stock.
