Paleo Banana Dark Chocolate “Cakies”
09.9.11
I thought I would end the week with a little “treat”. A Paleo treat of course. These little bites I’m calling “cakies” because they aren’t really “cookies”. These little “cakies” are soft which if you ask some people a cookie should not be. But if you ask me, a cookies MUST be soft, not crunchy and crispy. Everybody is different and prefers their cookies different so that is why I’m making up my own name and calling these a cakie instead of a cookie. And because these little treats are soft, they are my little heaven in a Paleo diet world. They have no added sugar, just the sweetness of the banana, and have the protein, fat, and fiber from the almond flour and almond butter. I’m telling you these are great for someone like me that has an occasional sweet tooth and needs an “occasional” treat. Even better, they are super easy to make and make only a small baking sheet of cookies. So you don’t have to worry about having dozens of cookies around the house to tempt you.
My little ones actually helped in making these with me, so again super easy and fast to make. And to top it off they have no eggs, so the little ones love them even more because they can lick the bowl. The only problem in my house is the fight that incurs of who gets the last lick. To solve that battle I took the last bite. Luckily, just then the timer went off and the cookies were done and I had to eager little girls waiting for the cookies to cool off so they could try their creation. Love having them in the kitchen with me!
I have to warn you these will be eaten very quickly, but if by any reason they aren’t I would suggest you store the rest in the refrigerator or freezer to keep them fresh. Since they are so soft they don’t keep as well if kept out on the counter.
Banana Chocolate Chip “Cakies”
1 cup mashed ripe bananas, about 1 large banana
2 tablespoons creamy almond butter
1 tablespoons apple butter (optional)*
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
Pinch of Salt
1 ¼ cup almond flour
¼ cup Dark Chocolate Chips OR Chunks (85% cacao and higher with no soy lethicin)
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
With a hand mixer, blend together the banana, almond butter, apple butter, vanilla extract, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt. Add in almond flour and chocolate chips and stir to combine.
Using a 1 ½” ice cream scoop, scoop dough into even scoops and place on prepared baking sheet. Bake for 11-14 minutes or until cookies are slightly golden on top. Remove from oven and allow to cool slightly before removing from pan. Again, these are soft so if you remove too soon you’ll have a soft cookie crumb mess.
Enjoy!
*Note: For the apple butter, look for a brand that uses apples only no added sugars or additives. My favorite brand is Kime’s Cider Mill, which I find at my local Whole Foods.

Can’t wait to make these! I made the dry rub chicken burgers last night for dinner and they were delicious. Keep the great recipes coming.
Ran out of almond butter can I use peanut butter instead?
Oh out of apple butter can i use applesauce?
Looks yummy
Cool! This is a really neat idea. Yum!
Hi Saniel,
I haven’t used peanut butter but I’m sure it could be switched out with the almond butter. And if you don’t have apple butter, just add one more tablespoon of almond butter or peanut butter in your case. Let me know how you like them if you use peanut butter.
thanks for stopping by!
I am totally with you..cookies HAVE to be soft. I am totally loving these. They have officially made it to my “to bake” list!
These look so tasty! Great idea!
I made these and my house smelled de-lish.
One thing I would change is next time I’ll measure out the mashed banana. I just added 1 mashed banana, but maybe it wasn’t a full cup, b/c when I tasted it, it had a baking soda taste to it and could use more sweetness. Other than that, they looked great, just like your picture, and my husband thought they were delicious! Thanks for all the amazing paleo recipes!
Fantastic! Simple and great.
I made these as directed above and, seeing as it is Thanksgiving, had to try a variation. Thanksgiving just isn’t Thanksgiving without pumpkin pie. I didn’t have the time to bake a full paleo pie and having never done it, I wanted something a bit safer.
Instead of banana, I used 1cup of canned pumpkin. Nothing added. I also added 1 teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice. This was very thick, like dough, and not at all sweet. I added about 3 tablespoons of honey, and we were rocking.
The pumpkin seems to have a lot more water in it and they take about twice as long to bake.
I’m betting if you like sweet potato pie you could use a baked sweet potato that has been cooled and mashed.
Cheers and Happy Thanksgiving!
What I love about this recipe is that it is egg-free!! Hooray!! I hope to make these tonight, or tomorrow for breakfast :0) Thx.
Do you have the nutritional value on these?
Hi Grace,
I don’t offer nutritional stats on my recipes because I just share them for fun. There are many sites out there that you can plug in the ingredient list and it will calculate the nutritional data for you.
Thanks,
MD
I’m eating one of these now and they are, hands down, the best Paleo cookies. So delicious.
Awesome Rebekah! So happy you liked them.
Made these tonight. I’m new to paleo and have been craving something a little sweet. These were DELICIOUS and husband approved. Thank you!
Oh !!! These are soooo good! I found you via pinterest and baked these delectable morsels tonight. I didn’t have almond butter on hand so I used some Valencia peanut butter from trader joes & didn’t have apple butter, so I used some homemade super chunky apple sauce { granny smith apples, nutmeg, cinnamon & stevia –all cooked in crockpot}.
When these get gobbled up, I’m going to double the recipe!
Thanks so much for creating this fabulous recipe–who needs conventional cookies…not me !
Sorry to keep going on and on, but I’m so excited I found your blog, I can’t wait to delve into your site and plan some other meals & treats:)
Hey, I just wanted to say a big THANK YOU for this recipe!! I just tried it today and the result was delicious! I didnt’t have enough almond flour so I added 1/4 cup buckwheat flour, used apple sauce instead of the mashed banana and since I didn’t have any chocolate chips either (lol) I just added a bit of carob powder! So good, soft and cakey!
We had a client bring these to our friends and family event…they were the first things to disappear! My suggestion would be for you to add a pinterest button so we can share. I am super excited to try more of your delicious recipes. Thank you!!

Hi there, I simply love your cakies. Do you think they would work baked in a brownie tray, then cut up into slices after refrigerating? Cheers!
These are amazing! I am pregnant and trying to eat healthy and yummy at the same time. They were so easy to make and so delicious. Thanks for posting this recipe!
Two Words…..Yum Mee. Just made these today, I love them, they’re so delicious. Of course I messed up the recipe by putting 2 tablespoons of apple butter instead of 1 but they still turned out great. I plan on trying all your cakies.
Hi, how many servings do you get from this recipe? It looks awesome! I tried the donut recipe…. Which was fantastic! Thanks so much!
Hi Debbie,
It really depends on how big you make them. If you go for the larger cookies similar to the ones in the photo’s the recipe makes about 10 to 12 cakies. If you make them smaller you can get more around 20 to 22. Hope you enjoy them!
Thank you:)! I got 12 from the recipe! I also made the double chocolate cakies!! These are both AMAZING!!!!!! It was hard to control myself….. They are now my favorite goodie! They are so easy to whip up! I also sandwiched a few of them with almond butter!! Omg is all I can say! I have also made your chocolate donuts which where amazing as well! Thank you for sharing your talent for baking !
I made these last night and they were delicious. Thank you for sharing and this morning I am making your breakfast casserole. As a matter of fact the dinger is going off now!
can you use coconut butter instead of almond butter?
they look super yummy!
These are delicious I cut the baking soda down to 1/4 tsp and added more mashed banana and they taste amazing!!
I just thought I’d drop a line to let you know that these worked out perfectly for me. I made them pretty much as is, except I used Ghiradelli chocolate chips (they are leftover from before I went more or less paleo).
This was only my second attempt at paleo baking, and the first was a disaster. These were wonderful. They remind me of the chocolate chip banana muffins I used to make. Thanks. These are definitely going into my Use Up The Spotty Bananas file.
OMGoodness I seen these and HAD to make them, what a big mistake they are totally awesome and I could eat all of them at once!
Holding myself back.. Great recipe love it!!
These are AMAZING!! They don’t even taste like they are free of sugar! I used Peanut butter (instead of almond) and pumpkin butter (instead of apple) because it’s what I had in stock. I also used a pre-mashed and frozen banana which worked just fine–although the dough was a little runnier and cookies spread out more like regular cookies would.
Since I discovered this recipe, I have made these five times. I found the recipe 10 days ago. They are SO good. I make a batch and they are gone instantly. My kids LOVE them, I love them, I’m so glad I found this recipe!
Just made these. I knew from the moment I licked the mixing bowl I was in love. I made them without the chocolate chips and they’re still delicious!
OH.MY.GOODNESS. These are so wonderful!!! I followed the recipe to a “T” except I didn’t have any apple butter and they turned out perfect. THANK YOU so much for posting this! This is my family’s new favorite Saturday morning treat!
I made these and they were incredible. I chanegd the recipe a little too. It is on my little blog here http://sias-cooking-blog.blogspot.com.au/
I just wanted to ask why you say the chocolate has to NOT contain soy lecithin?
Thanks again for the great recipe.
I’m gonna make these today. Can’t wait to enjoy them with my afternoon coffee!
